Elite Genetics on Offer at Black & White Sale
The Borderway Black and White Sale at Carlisle which this year will be held on Saturday 1 December, has become a globally recognised and highly successful event within the dairy industry.
This year is no exception and farmers from the North West are strongly represented in what is headlined as the best yet with an incredible line up of international genetics with consignments from all over the UK, USA, Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands.
Hosted by Harrison & Hetherington, this prestigious event, now in its 32nd year, is firmly established as a global opportunity to invest in the world’s leading genetics and this year has 111 animals being presented for sale. For the first time ever, this year’s sale features the National Champion, the National Calf Champion and the Intermediate Champion from UK Dairy Expo as well as the Italian National Champion. The Sale has highly sought-after genetics from all the major dairy breeds, and an exclusive opportunity to buy embryos, not offered to market anywhere in the world. The Sale will be the focal point for international pedigree breeders and showcases Cumbria as a leading region for the best genetics in the world.
One of the absolute highlights from the programme is the sale of the UK Dairy Expo 2018 National Champion Calf, consigned by Evening Holsteins, in Thursby near Carlisle. Born in August 2017, this heifer also won the Champion Calf Border & Lakeland Calf Show 2018 and will no doubt see fierce competition from buyers at the Sale. Evening Holsteins will also sell Evening Ashlyns Solo, a November 2017 born heifer, sired by Walnutlawn Solomon.
Belle Genetics from Penrith in Cumbria also have two consignments including Belle Sunny Australia. Born in August 2017, she is she is in calf to Luck-E Absolute Awesome Red. Sired by Walnutlawn Solomon Belle Sunny Australia ET, she is full sister to Blythbridge Solomon Australia, sold as a First Choice Black & White Sale 2016 for 6,000gns. Her dam, Illens Atwood Australia EX95-2E 2gensVG/EX, was Supreme Champion UK Dairy Day 2017 and Supreme Champion UK Dairy Expo 2016 to name a few. This is an amazing opportunity to own a daughter of one of the most popular cows in Europe. Crossfell Holsteins from Kirkby Thore near Penrith will be attendance and will see Crossfell Bandares Shelly ET, born May 2017. With an impressive GPLI+£555, this heifer is bred 11 generations of proven bull dams and is from the direct line of proven sire Shamrock.
For the first time in Holstein history a heifer sells from FIVE generations of cows that have produced over 100 ton of milk in their lifetime. Denmire Upright Marie 498 is consigned by the renowned Dennison family from Ulverston. Born in February this year, this heifer is a maternal sister to Denmire Niagra Marie 216 VG87 who has produced over 50ton of milk in 4 lactations and will be much sought after for buyers looking for exceptional type combined with high production.
The final Cumbrian consignments come from M&R Harper, from Maryport, who will be there with three animals including Lillyhall Blooming Evelyn PI, from one of the best Brown Swiss families in the breed. This heifer, due to calve early January to Brown Haven R Famous (sexed) has an outstanding pedigree. Her 5th dam Lyndale Convincer Elaine EX93-5E was the Unanimious All American 1988, 1989 & 1990, Grand Champion World Dairy Expo 1988 & 1989, Grand Champion Central National 1988, 1989 & 1990. Brown Haven R Famous (service sire) is son of Brown Haven Glenn Fantasy; the All-American and All-Canadian 4 year old, Grand Champion WDE 2015 & 2016, Unanimous All American 5yr old 2015 and Mature Cow 2016.
