The fifth annual charity Mule Wether lamb show and sale staged by Addingham & District Sheep Breeders’ Association at Skipton Auction Mart raised £3,786 for Sue Ryder – Manorlands Hospice at Oxenhope, near Keighley. (Wed, Dec 14)

Staged as part of the fortnightly store sheep sale, 34 lambs, predominantly Mule wethers supplemented by a number of store lambs, were donated by association members and local farmers. Over £20,000 has now been realised for the charity through the annual fund-raiser.
Co-judges David Watson, of Kirkby Lonsdale and Angus Dean, of Threshfield, awarded the 2011 championship to Richard Ellis, exhibiting on behalf of the Addingham Moorside farming family.
First up in the sales ring, the title winner was initially knocked down by Craven Cattle Marts’ auctioneer Ted Ogden for £240 to event sponsor Chris Pearson, of Pearson Farm Supplies, West Marton, who immediately handed it back for resale.
So too did four other purchasers – CCM chairman Anthony Hewetson, of Bank Newton, at £160, Skipton regular Stephen Dorey, of Norton Disney, Lincolnshire, CCM vice-chairman Keith Downs, of Bingley, and Alan and Sue Throup, of Silsden Moor, who all added a further £100 to the kitty.
The final buyer, again at £100, was Craven Cattle Marts, meaning that the six-times sold victor netted a total of £810. It will now be wintered by Stephen Dorey and will return to the Skipton sale ring next Spring to raise further funds for Manorlands.
Reserve honours for the third year running to fell to Joe and Nancy Throup, of Draughton, their charge selling at £95 to Ashley Caton, Otterburn. The third prize winner from David and Robin Booth, of Feizor, Clapham, was knocked down for £100 to James Dewhirst, on behalf of Skipton-based Stanforths Butchers, while the fourth prize lamb from Richard Caton, Stainforth, also realised £95 when claimed by John & Judy Garnett, Draughton.
Proceeds were also boosted by several cash donations, along with the sale of donated shepherds’ crooks and fruit cakes. Craven Cattle Marts again provided facilities for the event at no cost, also waving all commission charges on the sale.
Manorlands fundraiser Andrew Wood said: “It was again a fantastic effort by the regional farming community and we are hugely grateful for their support. The funds raised are a massive boost to our work, which sees us care for over 650 local people living with serious conditions such as cancer. We also owe huge thanks to the mart itself.”
