Baileys Suffolk Flock Production Sale
2011-11-18

The 14th annual production sale from the noted Baileys Suffolk flock, property of Tom Bailey, takes place on Saturday, November 26. The auction takes place on-farm at Culcommon, Batterstown, County Meath (beside the football pitch), commencing at 12.30pm.

The 8,000gns Baileys BMW - the 2010 Royal Highland and Royal Welsh Show champion. His half sister (lot 1) sells at the Baileys production sale on November 26.

This year’s sale includes guest consignments from the Carragh flock, property of Gerry Killilea, Cregcarragh, Claregalway, County Galway; and the DeBurca flock, property of Trevor Burke, Ballybanagher, Cummer, Tuam, County Galway.

The catalogue comprises of 78 lots, including 51 gimmers and 27 ewes. All three flocks are scrapie monitored and are on the Heptavac P system.

This much-anticipated sale of 2011 offers pedigree breeders a unique opportunity to acquire some of the best, and most proven, Suffolk bloodlines available throughout Europe. All entries are eligible for immediate export. Sheep purchased for export to Great Britain or European destinations will be delivered to Carlisle free of charge.

Many of the Bailey’s gimmers on offer are daughters of Cairness New Approach , Baileys Bacchus and Cairness Kanine – purchased jointly in 2008 with the Forkins flock. They are bred from dams by top rams such as the 70,000gns Rhaeadr Rossi – 2006 Edinburgh champion and Balmoral Show champion in 2007; and the 45,000gns Boreland Buddah.

Some of the stars of the sale include a half sister (lot 1) to the 8,000gns Baileys BMW – supreme champion at the Royal Highland and Royal Welsh Shows in 2010; a half sister (lot 8) to the 7,000gns Baileys Bugatti; and (lot 41) a half sister to the 12,000 Euro Baileys Paddy.

All gimmers have been served or AI’d to leading rams such as Rhaeadr Rossi, Cairness Achievement and Cairness Liam – sire of the breed’s 90,000gns record holder.

Gerry Killlea’s Carragh entry includes gimmers by Garryhinch Empire, Cairness Achievement, and Solwaybank Sovereign, as well as ET daughters of Baileys Masterpiece and Muiresk Powerpacker.

The service sires of the Carragh offering include the Fordafourie President son, Cairness Direct Line; Ardlea Action and Solwaybank Suarez.

Trevor Burke’s DeBurca entry includes ET gimmers by leading sires such as the home-bred Strathisla Schumacher son, DeBurca Deezer; and Cairness Commandeur. They are bred from dams by Knockeroghery King, Strathisla Scallywag, and Baileys the Best; while the service sires include Perrinpin Dandy, DeBurca Black Diamond, and Chessy James

The 27 ewes catalogued range in age from January 2004 to January 2009. They are bred from rams such as Whitestone Warrior, Rhaeadr Rossi, Cairness Almighty the Second, and include ET daughters of Baileys Masterpiece and Meikleson Impression.

The service sires of the ewes catalogued include the Baileys Bacchus son, Cairness Crean; the 8,000gns Ewebank Eleazar; and Solwaybank Suarez.

One of the ET ewes on offer (lot 53) is a full sister to the 2,900 Euro Carragh Viagra; while another (lot 54) is a half sister to Cairness First Flight – sire of the 70,000gns Rhaeadr Rossi.

The ewe portion of the catalogue features some of the breed’s best known bloodlines, and also includes a full ET sister (lot 63) to Baileys Masterpiece; a ewe (lot 71) from the same family as the 7,500 Euro Bailey’s Brigadier The Second; an excellent Rossi daughter (lot 73) bred from the same dam as the 40,000 Euro Baileys Block Buster; and a ewe (lot 75) whose pedigree goes back to the 25,000gns Baileys Caesar and the 23,000gns Cairness Court.
