Longtown Primestock Sale

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 38 prime cattle, 32 over thirty month cattle, 3,724 prime hoggs and 3,665 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 4th February, 2010.

A smaller show of prime cattle saw trade sharper. Top prices of 187.5p, 185.5p, 179.5p and 173.5p for Limousins from Hallburn, others to 173.5p Houghton House and Brisco Hill, 171.5p (x2) Hallburn; Blonde d’Aquitaine 171.5p Houghton House; Charolais 171.5p Hallburn. Limousin bullocks to 177.5p Haining House.

The 32 over thirty month cattle met a sharper trade with Charolais cows selling to 129.5p from Blindhillbush; Limousin 124.5p Campingholm, 120.5p Blindhillbush, 103.5p, 101.5p, 93.5p Kilnhill; British Blue 120.5p D’Mainholm; Friesian 99.5p Halltown, 96.5p Windy Hill, 91.5p, 86.5p Halltown; Galloway 88.5p Campingholm, 77.5p Hartsgarth. Overage steers to 129.5p for Galloway from Moorhills; Blue Grey 125.5p Spoutbank. Friesian heifers to 115.5p Ashfield.

Another good, yet smaller show of 3,724 prime hoggs sold to the usual full ring of buyers, resulting in an overall average of 199p per kilo. The 1,009 hoggs under 36 kilos averaged 206.1p and the 2,722 hoggs over 36 kilos averaged 197p.

The 3,665 cast ewes and rams were presented to a full ring of buyers and met a brisk trade with light ewes in short supply. Big ewes were still easy to sell, however fat ewes were harder to cash.
