All but two of the 45 rams forward found new homes, the majority purchased for breeding purposes. Champion was a home-bred shearling from Godfrey Haygarth, Aigden Farm, Wigglesworth. By a sire from Neil Jackson, Town Head Farm, Horton-in-Ribblesdale, the victor joined W Huck, Silsden, for 200 guineas.

Reserve champion was the first prize aged ram from Tom Robinson, Catlow Farm, Slaidburn. The runner-up is by a Frank Brennand, Chapel-le-Dale, tup.

Top call in show at 300gns fell to a shearling ram from William and Roland Verity, of Middlestean Farm Middlesmoor, Harrogate. By a Bernard Capstick, Horton-in-Ribblesdale, tup out of Beckwithshaw-based Michael and David Wilson ewe, the ram remained in the area when acquired by John Verity & Son, Whitmoor House, West End, Blubberhouses.

Neil Jackson himself sold a shearling ram for 200gns to Alan Fothergill, Doublerstones, Silsden.

Former Skipton Auction Mart foreman Royston Baxter was on hand to present his own annual trophy, while the Dalesbred Sheep Breeders’ Association again opted for a youth policy in its choice of judges – 18-year-old John Carr, of Horton-in-Ribblesdale, and Robert Lambert, 24, of Hawes.

Results: Aged ram – 1 R Robinson & Son, Slaidburn, 2 CM Faraday, Westhouse, 3 BD and PM Gill & Son, Yarlsber. Shearling ram – 1 GC Haygarth, Wigglesworth, 2 RH Close, Starbotton, 3 H Jackson & Son, Horton-in-Ribblesdale.
