New Top Jersey and Ayrshire in Latest MDC Breeding+ Rankings
17/01/08

MDC breeding+ has published the latest production proofs for all UK available bulls this week (17 January). This latest data for specialist dairy breeds, that ranks sires on Profitable Lifetime Index (PLI) scores, reveals a new number one sire in the Jersey and Ayrshire breeds.

Ahlem Lemvig Abe-ET

Ahlem Lemvig Abe is the new top Jersey bull. A high milk sire, he has a PLI of £212. He is closely followed by the previous number one sire Sunset Canyon Maximus. The highest new entry in the Jersey PLI rankings is DJ Look who comes straight in at fourth place, benefiting from a strong daughter lifespan proof at +0.3 lactations.

Hunday Major Red, with a PLI of £202, takes over as top Ayrshire sire from Morwick Sand Ranger. Major Red’s somatic cell count score of -18, indicating that he has the ability to breed daughters with a cell count of 18% lower than the breed average, and his lifespan score of 0.3 have contributed to him gaining top place in the breed.

Peterslund remains firmly in control of the top spot in the pure Ayrshire listings thanks to improved daughter lifespan ratings now at +0.5 lactations.

Blackisle Glen Albyn holds on to top spot in the Friesian PLI rankings with a score of £202. He improved further on his daughter lifespan, now at 0.3, and fertility ratings and is now well clear of second placed Dovea Bass with a PLI of £159. Third place is shared between Sem 7 and Grietman, both with PLI’s of £136.

Jensgolden Victory Hunter remains the highest ranked bull on the Guernsey Merit Index (GMI) at 460, followed by a new entry Coulee Crest Luxury Spider. Meadow Court Red Oak ranks third, transmitting the best overall fitness balance of the three with a good daughter lifespan of +0.2 lactations and a SCC of –14%.

“We are continuously improving the genetic information provided for specialist dairy breeds and the latest development on type information, which were first introduced at the last proof run, will assist producers in making the most accurate choices of sires,” says MDC breeding+ director Marco Winters. “But producers must not compare sires between breeds – just within them – as each breed uses its own genetic base.”
