The Doncombe herd of British Blonde cattle owned by David Knight
and Sue Cavilla of Bristol, has been recognised by EBLEX (English
Beef and Lamb Executive) and Farmers Guardian as the Most Improved
            Herd of British Blondes 2006/07.

The award is presented by the EBLEX Beef Better Returns Programme
(Beef BRP) to the recorded herd* that shows the most impressive improvement
to its genetic merit over a 12 month period. There is a separate
award for each of eight UK breeds.

David Knight said: “Winning this award is great for us in terms
of recognising the work that we have put in. We have been recording
for a number of years now, and I very much support the principle.
It came as a pleasant surprise to win, but we have an excellent stock
bull that probably helps to improve the overall figures for the herd.”

Mr Knight accepted the award from Jo Pugh, Livestock Editor, Farmers
Guardian who supported the scheme. It was presented at The Royal
            Show in July.

Netta de la Cour, Beef BRP Project Manager, EBLEX, said: “Using
EBVs in a commercial herd can improve returns by around £30
per calf. Through this award we hope to highlight not only the excellent
progress made by breeders but also the opportunities available to
            beef producers.”

James Weightman, Chairman of the British Blonde Society said: “I
am very pleased for the Doncombe herd which is an excellent example
of the quality available to commercial producers through the British
            Blonde breed.

“They have been supporters of the recording system for many
years. I hope others will follow their example – the more recording
members we can get, the better the commercial prospects for the breed.”
