Alltech are delighted to announce that Sel-Plex - the only organic
selenium, has just received authorisation as a nutritional feed
additive for use in all species diets, from the European Union
(EU) under EU regulation 1750/2006. Sel-Plex is a selenized yeast
produced by Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-3060. Sel-Plex is
the only product of its kind to have received this authorisation.

Selenium plays an essential role in metabolism,
orchestrating normal growth, launching reproductive efforts,
neutralising free radicals and supporting the body’s normal
defence mechanism against infection. Despite the traditional
practice of supplementing animal diets with inorganic selenium,
selenium deficiencies remain widespread, and ultimately cost
producers in terms of overall health and reproductive issues.

The selenium in Sel-Plex is presented in the same form that is
naturally present in plants. These forms include selenoamino
acids and related compounds ideally suited to digestion and metabolism.
This means the selenium in Sel-Plex is more digestible and better
retained. This allows the animal to build nutrient reserves against
periods of increased demand without risking toxicity.

“We are delighted with the EU authorisation and this stamp
of approval further enhances the confidence we have in all our
natural feed products. This re-enforces our commitment to research
and development, and our customers can be satisfied that our
products comply with EU regulations,” said Aidan Connolly,
                vice president, Alltech.

“Selenium, often limited in modern diets fed to food animals,
is an essential part of the body's antioxidant defence system
and is needed for normal growth and reproduction. Sel-Plex moves
selenium supplementation forward by providing the mineral in
the natural form that occurs in forages, grains and oilseeds,” said
Jem Clay, managing director, Alltech UK.

Sel-Plex is also the only organic selenium to have received FDA
approval in the USA, in 2000 for use in chicken diets, followed
by turkey, swine, beef and dairy feeds and most recently for
dog diets. It is the only product with safety and toxicity data
that has been FDA reviewed and EU approved.

Alltech believes Sel-Plex is a powerful nutritional tool to help
producers profitably deliver high-quality products to the market.
